The Red Wings picked up winger Drew Miller off of waivers from the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Drew is the younger brother of the Buffalo Sabres star goaltender (and long-time subject of Red Wings fans lust) Ryan Miller. Drew also played at Michigan State, spending three years in the CCHA – including one as the Spartans’ captain.
He has played 67 NHL games, but does have a Stanley Cup as a member of the Anaheim Ducks.
He comes with a $525,000 salary, which easily fits in given all the players that are currently on IR. His contract is two-way and expires on July 1st.
TPL’S TAKE:
I feel like this is a move to shore up quote-unquote veteran depth on the forward ranks until some of those injured players return. No one should expect Drew Miller to replace a ton of lost offense (he has six goals in his career), but he should provide another option on the wing until Franzen, Filppula, and Williams are ready to return.
I’m sure the Wings will try to sneak Miller down to Grand Rapids when that happens, necessitating another waiving, and if someone else picks him up, mahzel tov.
In the meantime, welcome to the Wings. Perhaps we’ll see Miller tomorrow night against the Canucks if there’s another injury or someone else needs a kick in the pants.
